On His last night, the disciples’ feet were still damp from His washing. Judas had just walked out into the dark. And Jesus gave them something He called new.
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (John 13:34)
The command to love wasn’t new. Leviticus had said love your neighbor centuries before. What was new was the measure: as I have loved you. Feet washed. A traitor served bread. A cross the next day.
He said it five times that night. The last one sounds like a man making sure they heard: This is My command. Love each other. (John 15:17)
Paul said he wasn’t without law. He was under the law of Christ. And he told us how to keep it: carry each other’s burdens. (1 Corinthians 9:21; Galatians 6:2)
Starting Saturday, we’ll walk through every “one another” in the New Testament, one at a time. Fifty-nine of them. This is what the love looks like with its sleeves rolled up.
There is no exception clause to the love we are to show.
In His grace,
