Navigating Politics as a Christian: A Biblical Perspective

In these tumultuous political times, Christians often find themselves grappling with how to engage in the political process while staying true to their faith. This article provides a biblical framework for approaching politics, reminding us of God’s sovereignty and our responsibilities as heavenly and earthly citizens.

God’s Sovereign Rule

The unwavering belief in God’s sovereignty should be at the heart of our political engagement. The Scriptures remind us:

“The Lord has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.”
(Psalm 103:19)

This truth assures us that God’s kingdom will ultimately triumph regardless of political outcomes. As Daniel proclaimed:

“His kingdom will never end, and his government will never be destroyed.”
(Daniel 6:26)

The Power of the Gospel

While politics can influence society, true transformation comes through the Gospel. Paul boldly declared:

“For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes.”
(Romans 1:16)

As Christians, our primary focus should be on sharing this life-changing message, which has the power to transform individuals and, by extension, entire nations.

The Church’s Enduring Mission

Regardless of political climates, the church’s mission remains constant. Jesus’ Great Commission still stands:

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”
(Matthew 28:19)

God’s Control Over Leaders

We can take comfort in knowing that God holds sway even over political leaders:

“The king’s heart is like a stream of water directed by the Lord; he guides it wherever he pleases.”
(Proverbs 21:1)

This applies to all leaders, even those who don’t acknowledge God. As we see in the case of Cyrus:

“This is what the Lord says to Cyrus, his anointed one, whose right hand he will empower…’And why have I called you for this work? Why did I call you by name when you did not know me? It is for the sake of Jacob my servant, Israel my chosen one.'”
(Isaiah 45:1,4)

Freedom from Anxiety

Given these truths, Christians need not be anxious about political outcomes:

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.”
(Philippians 4:6)

America and Biblical Israel

It’s crucial to understand that modern America is not equivalent to Old Testament Israel. God’s covenant with Israel was unique:

“For you are a holy people, who belong to the Lord your God. Of all the people on earth, the Lord your God has chosen you to be his own special treasure.”
(Deuteronomy 7:6)

However, we can learn from Israel’s history, including that many of its kings were flawed individuals, yet God still worked through them.

Christians in Politics

While the church and state should remain separate, God has often used His people in political roles. Think of Joseph, Daniel, and Esther. Their examples show us that Christians can positively influence government while maintaining their faith.

Voting as Stewardship

Voting is a privilege that Christians should approach with gratitude and wisdom. It’s a way to seek the welfare of our nation, as Jeremiah advised the exiles:

“And work for the peace and prosperity of the city where I sent you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, for its welfare will determine your welfare.”
(Jeremiah 29:7)

Practical Considerations

Regarding voting, Christians should consider the practical implications of their choices. While we may wish for perfect candidates, we often must choose between imperfect options. Voting for the candidate who will do more good and less harm is not a compromise of faith but a wise stewardship of our influence.

Conclusion

As we navigate this election season, let’s remember that our ultimate citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20). Yet, we are also called to be salt and light in this world (Matthew 5:13-16). We can fulfill our dual roles as heavenly and earthly citizens by grounding ourselves in God’s Word, trusting in His sovereignty, and prayerfully engaging in the political process.

May we heed the words of Jesus:

“Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.”
(Matthew 22:21)

As we do so, let’s trust God and vote wisely, knowing that our political engagement can be an act of worship and love for our neighbors.
