What Does Colossians 3:16 Mean?

The Bible is filled with phrases that are easy to understand on the first reading but take a little more time and thought to digest thoroughly. This can be especially true of Bible verses when they are phrased in such simple and straightforward language that it almost feels like a child could have written them. The simplicity of some Biblical phrases can actually make them very tricky to understand — and one of the most challenging is found in Colossians 3:16, which reads, “Let the word of Christ live in you richly.” However, even though this phrase might seem almost too simple for words, it contains many implications about how we live our Christian lives. In fact, this short phrase touches upon many different themes found throughout the Bible. Here is what Colossians 3:16 means and what we should take away from it…

Colossians 3:16 in Context.

The verse before Colossians 3:16 and the verses after it make it easier to understand the full significance of this Bible verse. Colossians 3:15-17 reads, “Let your heart be always guided by the peace of the Anointed One, who called you to peace as part of his one body. And always be thankful. Let the word of Christ live in you richly, flooding you with all wisdom. Apply the Scriptures as you teach and instruct one another with the Psalms, and with festive praises, and with prophetic songs given to you spontaneously by the Spirit, so sing to God with all your hearts! Let every activity of your lives and every word that comes from your lips be drenched with the beauty of our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One. And bring your constant praise to God the Father because of what Christ has done for you!”

The Meaning of Colossians 3:16

When we look at the meaning of Colossians 3:16, we find that the word “word” really refers to Jesus Christ. Whenever we speak of the “word of Christ,” we are really talking about Christ himself. To live richly in the word of Christ means to be fully immersed in Christ himself — and to be surrounded entirely by his grace and his love. This is possible because Christ lives richly in us — and, by his grace and his Holy Spirit, he is able to transform us and make us entirely his own. To live richly in the word of Christ means to trust in him fully. It means putting your faith in him and entirely relying on him for everything. It means always reading the Bible and fully absorbing its message — and constantly being surrounded by the Holy Spirit, who is the true author of the Bible. It means to be so filled with the love of Christ that you are unable to contain it — and to be so full of his grace that you have nothing left to hide from him.

What “Let the Word of Christ Live in You Richly” Means

Letting the word of Christ live richly in us means choosing to live our lives according to the Bible. It means relying on the Bible for everything from guidance on how to live our day-to-day lives to advise on how to deal with the challenges we face to instructions on how to deal with other people. Rather than being guided by other people’s opinions, letting the word of Christ live richly in us means being guided by the Bible. This is because the Bible is God’s word — and, as such, it is completely trustworthy and completely reliable. It also means being completely honest with God. If we are letting the word of Christ live richly in us, then we have no choice but to be completely truthful with God. We have no choice but to admit our sins, mistakes, and weaknesses because God’s word tells us that he already knows all of these things and loves us even though we are not perfect.

The Importance of Living According to the Word of Christ

The importance of living according to the word of Christ can be seen in the example of the Israelites in the book of Exodus. The Israelites were God’s chosen people and were supposed to be living examples of his grace, love, and wisdom. However, they panicked when they were confronted with a new Pharaoh who was determined to wipe them out and destroy them. They didn’t know what to do, so they began to pray to false gods and make offerings to them to try and save themselves. Colossians 3:16 makes it clear that while we do not have to fear any false gods or false religions, we mustn’t let the word of Christ live richly in us in the same way as the Israelites did. We mustn’t pray to false gods, or make offerings to false gods, or consult oracles to try and save ourselves. Instead, we must trust in the power of Christ to keep us — and we must let his word live richly in us so that we can know how to serve him best and truly live according to his word.

The Importance of Loving All Christians

When we are letting the word of Christ live richly in us, we also have to make sure we are loving all Christians. We must love our fellow Christians dearly because Jesus Christ himself loves all Christians, and, as his followers, we are supposed to reflect his love for them in our lives. As Christians, we are supposed to love God with all of our hearts, which means loving other Christians with a genuine love that burns just as brightly as our love for God himself. We are supposed to love each other just as thoroughly, as powerfully, as passionately, and just as completely as we love God — because only when we love one another can we love God completely.

What does it mean to sing to God with all your heart?

When we sing to God with all our hearts, we are singing to him with everything we have. We are singing to him with our minds and our bodies and with our hearts and souls, and we are singing to him freely and without restraint or hesitation. We sing to him without letting our feelings or experiences influence or alter the song we are singing. This is a message that we pass on to God- completely free of any kind of self-interest or self-concern. In other words, when we sing to God with all our hearts, we sing to him purely for his glory. This is what it means to sing to God with all our hearts: giving God everything we have — and giving him everything we have without letting anything hold us back. When we sing to God with all our hearts, we sing the same way a child sings when they’re trying out their first musical instrument for the first time. It is a purely authentic expression of joy and love — one that is without any kind of ulterior motive or hidden purpose.

Takeaway

All of these things are part of what it means to let the word of Christ live richly in us. When we let the word of Christ live richly in us, we are letting Christ himself into our hearts and souls and allowing him to transform us entirely. But we are also letting the Bible live richly in us — and we are letting the Bible transform our lives wholly and entirely. We are letting it change our minds, hearts, and souls — and we are letting it change how we live our lives and interact with others. If you can let the word of Christ live in you richly, and if you can live your Christian life according to the Bible, then you will have achieved something truly amazing.
